Paymaster General praises "Fantastic work" of Royal Hospital

1st February 2019

We were honoured to welcome Mel Stride MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General, to the home of the Chelsea Pensioners on 31 January.

Paymaster General Visit
Mr Stride, who is an ex-officio Commissioner of the Royal Hospital, explained how his role can be traced back over 300 years:

“One of the main driving forces behind the founding of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1692 was Paymaster of the Forces, Sir Steven Fox. His role was subsequently merged with others to create the position I am honoured to hold today.”

Mr Stride took the time to meet and talk with some of the Chelsea Pensioners. Following an update from our Governor, General Sir Adrian Bradshaw KCB OBE, on the work and plans for the future of the Royal Hospital, Mr Stride shared his feelings about the visit:

“It’s great to be here today to hear about the fantastic work the Hospital does to honour the nation’s covenant of care to Army veterans.”
